Can Cats Eat Ginger Snaps

Can Cats Eat Ginger Snaps

Can cats eat ginger snaps? Briefly, the answer is NO, they are unsafe for cats.

But why? Because, gingersnaps is a type of baked cookie that is typically flavored with cloves, ginger, nutmeg, shortening (or butter), and sugar, xylitol, or molasses.

It may occasionally also contain other ingredients, such as eggs and vanilla extract.

But, as we all know nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves are not healthy options for cats, these can cause poisoning in the liver of cats. It can also cause an oral blister, low bp, etc.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into it!

Is Gingersnaps Safe for Cats?

No. Even if these adorable creatures aren’t allergic to wheat, they shouldn’t consume ginger snaps or the dough used to make it.

Mind you, while ginger is both safe and healthy for cats to eat in small amounts, several elements in gingersnaps are toxic to cats. Such as:

1. Nutmeg:

It begins with nutmeg, a well-known spice derived from Myristica fragrans seeds. According to PetMD, nutmeg isn’t safe for pets.

And, when taken in big quantities, it may result in everything from “mildly upset stomach to hallucinations, confusion, increased heart rate, dry mouth, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal discomfort, and convulsions.”

Even if there isn’t much nutmeg in the item, you should avoid them. Because you must not want to put your pet’s health in risk, right?

2. Cinnamon:

Secondly, even though it may be widely used, cinnamon—especially cinnamon essential oil—may not be good for your furry friends.

Large doses of consumption could result in oral blisters, vomiting, and diarrhea. On top of that, inhaling cinnamon may cause irritation to their lungs.

3. Cloves:

Thirdly, according to Pet Poison Helpline, cloves are poisonous for cats as they contain eugenol, a chemical substance that can poison their liver.

4. Other Ingredients:

Last but not least, some producers use xylitol, a sugar-free sweetener that is frequently found in peanut butter, candies, and sometimes baked goods. So, consuming it can induce liver damage and low blood sugar in your pets.

Can Cats Feed on Ginger Flowers?

Well, it depends and the answer is both yes and no. Different varieties of ginger flowers exist, and not all of them are secure.

For instance, cats can safely eat the white ginger flower, also known as the white ginger lily, Garland flower, or cinnamon jasmine. The true lily and the daylily, on the other hand, are poisonous to cats.

Notes: Ginger leaves are safe for your cats if consumed in moderation.

How Much Ginger is Safe for Cats?

As a general rule, you should start with a very small pinch of stripped ginger (crushed or grated) into their food or roughly a tablespoon of prepared ginger tea for a 5kg cat.

You should only provide your little companion with this once or twice per day, and for no more than 2 or 3 days.
